  Siemens uses a minihelicopter equipped with onboard sensors to collect and interpret videos. Known as the quadrocopter, the aircraft uses the data to create a 3D digital model of its immediate surroundings. As reported in Pictures of the Future magazine, computer scientists working for Corporate Technology in Princeton and Munich have teamed up with robotics experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology near Boston to develop this sophisticated eye in the sky. The aim of the project is to create a system capable of producing digital models of complex interiors and inspecting inaccessible installations.

  Four driverless electric vans successfully ended an 8,000-mile (13,000-kilometer) test drive from Italy to China — a modern-day version of Marco Polo’s journey around the world — with their arrival at the Shanghai Expo on Thursday.

  Spanish robotics engineers have devised a new weapon in the battle against zombie-sats and space junk: an automated robotics system that employs computer vision technology and algorithmic wizardry to allow unmanned space vehicles to autonomously chase down, capture, and even repair satellites in orbit. Scientists at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) created the system to allow for the removal of rogue satellites from low earth orbit or the maintenance of satellites that are nearing the ends of their lives, prolonging their service (and extending the value of large investments in satellite tech). Through a complex set of algorithms, space vehicles known as “chasers” could be placed into orbit with the mission of policing LEO, chasing down satellites that are damaged or have gone “zombie” and dealing with them appropriately.

  With little fanfare on Saturday night, Google revealed that it has been furtively testing and refining driverless cars on the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles, clocking up an incredible 225,000 test-driving kilometres as they did so.

  Google says it has quietly gotten into the automotive automation research business by hiring some of the robotics engineers who won (or at least, performed well) in the Pentagon’s 2004, 2005 and 2007 self-driving car competitions - the so-called DARPA Grand Challenges. DARPA wants Humvees and trucks to drive themselves so supplies can be delivered without risking the lives of troops.

  The Global Observer, an unmanned airborne vehicle (UAV) that is designed to stay aloft for up to 7 days at an altitude of up to 65,000 feet while carrying a 400-pound payload, had its first flight last month. The launch from Edwards Air Force Base in California marked the beginning of a test program that will result in a week-long flight in the stratosphere using liquid-hydrogen fuel.
